RockShox Vivid Coil (2008-2024) Full DIY Rebuild Toolkit

⚠️ Safety Disclaimer

WARNING: These are high-pressure systems. Always release both air in the air spring (If air shock) and IFP pressure before disassembly. Improper handling can cause injury. These tools are intended for home mechanics only.

Here is a good Aftermarket Seal kit that you can get from mtb-hydraulics, it's really cheap and updated.

Open all adjusters before bleeding, follow OEM torque specs (but the sealhead..), and check the official RockShox service manuals when in doubt.

⚠️ RockShox Sealhead Torque Warning

RockShox recommends torquing their shock sealheads to ~30–34 Nm, but that’s arguably way too high.

Fox only uses 16 Nm to 20 Nm on their sealheads and they work perfectly. Why? Because:

  • The O-ring does all the sealing
  • The fine threads generate massive force with very little rotation
  • Overtorquing risks stripping threads, cracking parts, or ruining your tool

In this video at 13:50, even the pro doesn’t torque to 34 Nm, because you’d need over 50 pounds (22+ kg) of force on the wrench tip. That’s excessive.

We suggest staying around 20–25 Nm. That’s already more than Fox uses and more than enough to fully seal a fine-pitch thread with an O-ring.

Use our Torque Calculator to figure out the right pressure for your wrench length, there is a preset for the wrench.

Overtightening isn’t better. It’s just more likely to break something.

The RockShox Vivid Coil platform (2008-2024) shares a lot in common with the 2018-2022 Super Deluxe Coil, similar internals and procedure, just different adjusters and piggyback hardware. If you’ve rebuilt a Super Deluxe Coil before, this will feel very familiar.

Note: Some Vivid Coil models do not require a countermeasure compression tool. If your shock doesn’t use the countermeasure spring, you can get away without the Sealhead Negative Spring Compression Tool

Note on Compatibility: If your shock is labeled with "Counter-Measure", you must use Sealhead Negative Spring Compression Tool to safely compress the internal spring during reassembly. This is especially common on later-year Vivid Coil models.

 IFP Air Fill Adapter (Required)

To pressurize the damper side of any RockShox shock, you’ll need a RockShox IFP air valve adapter, this lets your shock pump connect to the internal reservoir.

It’s a small but essential tool for safe and proper rebuilds. If you don’t already have one, you can grab it here:

Do not forget to get yourself a schrader valve core tool!

 What's Included

 Knipex Adapter Included

Need to rebuild a 2023+ RockShox Super Deluxe Coil or the new 2025+ Vivid Coil?

We’ve added a custom 3D-printed adapter that clips onto the negative spring compression tool and lets you use Knipex 10" pliers instead. Works best with the jaws almost parallel.

Included free with every tool, no need to buy anything else. Just make sure you have Knipex 10' soft jawed wrench, these don't use the 6-pin wrench!

 IFP Depth & Oil

  • Vivid 2014–2022 (267 x 89 mm): IFP Depth = 53 mm, 200 psi
  • All other Vivid Coil models: IFP Depth = 49 mm, 200 psi

RockShox 3wt oil is no longer available, but these are perfect substitutes:

  • Fox 4wt (very close in viscosity)
  • Motorex 2.5wt (also ideal for this application)

If you’re bleeding through a bleed fitting and not using a compression tool, you can adjust the IFP depth using the formula below:

Adjusted IFP Depth = Base IFP Depth − [(6.35² × Shaft Lost) / (Reservoir Radius)²]

Example:
Base Depth = 49 mm
Shaft Lost = 10 mm
Reservoir Inner Diameter = 24 mm → Radius = 12 mm
Adjusted Depth ≈ 49 − [(6.35² × 10) / 12²] = 46.25 mm

Note: Only use this if bleeding through a proper M5 brake bleed fitting. Otherwise, use the base depth with the compression tool.
