FOX FLOAT X (2022+) Full DIY Rebuild Toolkit

This is a complete home rebuild toolkit for the FOX FLOAT X air shock (2022 and newer). It includes all the critical tools required for damper service, including all the tools for a full 50h–200h rebuild.

Fox uses a lot of chamferless sockets for this rebuild, but it can all be done with normal wrenches. Just make sure that you torque using the luggage scale technique. Chamferless sockets are not included, we tried making them, but they aren't strong enough. We try to keep costs low, so we don’t sell tools you don’t need.

āš ļø When torquing the main piston stud and nut, be very careful, the shaft is fragile due to small holes and can break easily.

Ā What It Does

Allows full teardown and rebuild of your FLOAT X shock. Designed specifically for home mechanics, not for shop use.

Ā What's Included

  • 1/2" Shaft Clamp : works with the FLOAT X main shaft
  • Graduated IFP Depth Tool : for setting proper IFP depth during rebuild
  • Float X Pin Socket : needed for 47.5mm–75mm travel shocks only (over 45mm)
    • A 10inch Knipex Plier wrench can work directly on the sealhead as well, it will leave some marks and you can torque precisely afterwards but I mean, just don't overtorque. I don't mind to marks to be honest, it's inside the shock.

Optional but Recommended:

Ā Notes on Compatibility

  • FLOAT X 37.5mm-45mm travel shocks use a different bearing housing. You can open these with a 32mm wrench after removing the travel spacer plate
  • You can use a Knipex Pliers Wrench on the sealhead if you're on a budget, it may leave cosmetic marks
  • FLOAT X 47.5mm-75mm shocks require the pin socket tool included in this kit
  • No base valve or rebound pin sockets are required for this rebuild, only standard tools

Ā Reservoir & IFP Specs

  • S: 1.795" piggyback reservoir length, 33 mm IFP depth
  • M: 1.955" piggyback reservoir length, 37 mm IFP depth
  • L: 2.115" piggyback reservoir length, 41 mm IFP depth
  • XL: 2.275" piggyback reservoir length, 45 mm IFP depth
  • IFP pressure: 150 psi
  • Use 4wt damper oil
Ā Float X Pro Bleed Tips
You can find the official Fox manual here: Float X 2022+ Rebuild Guide. But sadly, in the manual, they don't show the hand bleed procedure, shame on you fox!!!
  • The Float X is nearly identical to the DPX2, so you can use the DPX2 hand bleed procedure at the end of the manual as a better alternative.
  • Skip the damper shaft disassembly and base valve steps unless it’s leaking or you want to revalve the base valve. The manual overcomplicates everything but it's really like a full teardown, you don't need to do that, the dynamic seals rebuild is perfect (Sealhead and IFP).
    • The trick is that after you finished the step 11 of the DPX2 hand bleed procedure.
    • Make sure the IFP is not too low in the reservoir (middle at least)
    • Close the bleed screw in the middle of the IFP.
    • Open the other bleed screw on the tip of the damper tube.
    • Push down on the damper tube (Shock should already be vertical on the vise) 15mm only, a lot of air will come out.
    • Close the bleed screw on the damper tube.
    • Pull on the damper to fully extend it, the IFP will go down a little (5-6mm)
    • Open the bleed screw in the middle of the IFP and set the final IFP depth! :)
  • Ā Don't overtighten the IFP center screw!

For a basic visual overview, check out this video: Float X Basic Rebuild (YouTube). Note: newer versions can't connect a break bleed syringe anymore on the damper tip, but it’s not necessary, just a little messier.

Ā Important Safety Notes

  • Always release air spring pressure before opening the air can
  • Then release damper pressure via the IFP air valve using a Fox/RockShox IFP valve adapter
    • Make sure you have a shrader valve core remover tool, it's like 10$ on amazon and it's needed to release the pressure ffrom the damper.Ā
  • This kit does not include the Rockshox Air Fill Adapter. You must purchase one separately.
  • Never open a pressurized shock, this can cause serious injury
  • If unsure, do not proceed. Seek professional help
Well done: If you've made it this far, you’re taking this seriously and it shows. Most mistakes come from rushing or skipping the details. You're doing it right.
