Finger Caliper - Shock Sag Measurement Between Coils
Measure rear shock sag precisely on coil shocks, even when the shaft is hidden between tight spring coils. This finger-mounted caliper gives you accurate, metal tool-free sag readings without risking scratches or damage.
⚠️ Note: This tool does not fit shocks mounted inside tunnels or tight frame recesses (e.g. New Rocky Mountain Altitude, Santa Cruz, Forbidden). We’re working on a special caliper for that.
It's not a metal tool, be carefull not to break it, the measuring arms are really thin to fit in the coils.
What It Does
- Finger-mounted design lets you measure sag between spring coils quickly and precisely
- Ultra-slim arms slide between coils to measure shaft length without removing the spring
- Works with all major brands: Öhlins, Cane Creek, EXT, DVO, Push, Fox, Marzocchi
- Helps avoid scratches on stanchions, no more calipers against Kashima!
How to Use
- Turn the coil so that the shaft is exposed between coils near the sag ring
- Doesn't work super well on very narrow coils like Fox Steel springs.
- Insert one caliper tip below the sag ring and the other on the damper body (or eyelet)
- Read the printed scale or compare against your sag tool
- Optional trick: use the bottom-out bumper as a “sag marker” if you're working alone, push it up before you sit on the bike
Alternatives and Extras
- If you want to do it by eye, you can also use our Rear Shock SAG Tool and eyeball the gap between shaft and sag ring
- Our Sag Clips also work well, but can be tricky to remove on steel springs due to tighter coils
- Need help choosing the right coil spring? Try our Coil Spring Rate Calculator

Why It Matters
Getting rear shock sag right is crucial for performance. If your bike feels too harsh or too soft, or bottoms out too easily, it’s often a setup problem, not a shock problem. Accurate sag measurement is the first step.
Especially on coil shocks, where there's no visible gradient like on rockshox shocks, tools like this make all the difference. Take your time, measure it right, and your ride will feel way better.
Reminder: For tunnel-mounted shocks (inside frame tubes), this tool will not fit. A different caliper will be available soon.
