Trunnion Mount Shock Holder & Torque Tool by Shockwave Parts
This tool is made for home mechanics and bike shops working on modern mountain bikes with trunnion-mounted rear shocks like those from most Norco Bikes, Knolly, and many others. It gives you a safe, centered interface for clamping and torquing, without risking damage to the shock body or hardware. Compatible with all trunnion-mounted shocks, including Fox Float X, RockShox Super Deluxe, Cane Creek DB Kitsuma, and more (pretty much all shocks have a trunnion version).
If you're thinking of using the torque socket of that tool more than 20 times (Just use a luggaage scale and it will work forever), get that tool Real Fox Tool
What is a Trunnion-Mounted Shock?
Trunnion shocks use two M10 bolts threaded directly into the top of the shock instead of a standard eyelet. This allows shorter overall length and tighter packaging in modern frames, improving stiffness and kinematics. But it also removes any flex at the mounting point, which increases load on the shock so more friction in internal parts, more problems, rebuilds per season, etc... The mounting width is 54 mm, and it requires proper support during rebuilds.
Why This Tool Is Essential
- Prevents slippage and rotation when clamping the shock body in a vise
- Allows safe and accurate torquing of the damper body into the shaft (up to 18 Nm)
- Replaces risky setups like using rags or soft jaws (That will defenitely slip on the small 12mm wide rounded clamping area)
- Universally fits all trunnion-mounted shocks
What You Can Do With This Tool
- Clamping in a Vise: Thread into the M10 trunnion holes to safely clamp the shock and then clamp the tool in the vise to do your work!
- Torquing the Damper Body, Shaft, or Reservoir: Examples include torquing the IFP reservoir of a Fox Float X2 2021+ to 13.6 Nm or the damper body to 16.3 Nm. Use our luggage scale torque calculator for anything over 16 Nm. If using a torque wrench, the included sacrificial sockets are tight-fit and come in three sizes
- Assembly Stabilization: Hold the trunnion side in place when reinstalling the air can or reassembling the shaft stack
- Bleeding: You can tilt the shock and move it while bleeding, its very nice to have that freedom of movement
What’s Included
- Trunnion Mount Holder & Torque Adapter: Threads into standard M10 trunnion holes and then fits into your bench vise perfectly.
-
Sacrificial 3/8" Sockets (Set of 4): Three sizes to match slight wrench fitting differences:
- Small: 9.35-9.45 mm
- Medium: 9.45-9.55 mm
- Large: 9.55 mm and above (contact us if unsure)
Before You Start – Safety First
- Fully deflate the air spring and equalize the chambers slowly
- Release the IFP or bladder pressure using a shock pump or needle fill tool
- Double-check torque specs before tightening. Over-torquing will damage the shock or threads
Failure to follow these steps could lead to serious injury or equipment damage.
What You Still Need (Not Included)
- Luggage Scale (for torque setup for 25kg or more recommended)
- 1/4" to 3/8" Drive Socket Adapter
- 3/8" Torque Wrench (2–20 Nm range; use scale over 15 Nm)
- Suspension Oil and Seal Kit for your specific shock
- Basic Tools: Allen keys, caliper for measuring socket fit, etc.
