RockShox Motion Control Damper Rebuild Tool Kit
For forks using the classic Motion Control open bath damper, this is everything you need to safely open it and change the seal head or internals. This damper is found in many entry-level RockShox forks like Recon, 35, Yari, and Judy. Always base model. If your fork says “Select” or higher, this is not the right damper.
Included in this Kit:
- Motion Control Mid-Valve Clamp (9/16" / 14.3 mm) : required to hold the shaft for mid-valve disassembly
How to Identify This Damper
- Found only in base forks: Pike/Yari/Revelation 2019–2023, Judy, 35 Gold/Silver, Boxxer RC, older Reba and Recon, etc.
- Top cap is removed with a 24mm socket
- Open bath design : there’s no internal bladder or IFP
- Oil is stored in the damper extension itself
- No bleed needed : but oil volume must be extremely precise
⚠️ Critical Warning:
This damper is fragile and very sensitive to oil fill volume. Too much = hydro-lock and damage. Too little = no damping. Use only exact oil volumes as specified.
Use a 24mm socket to remove the compression unit, and pull it straight out, it’s mostly plastic and very easy to crack. Use circlip pliers to remove the lower clip and pull out the seal head.

How It Works
Unlike closed cartridge dampers, this one is open-bath and fills from the top directly into the stanchion. There's no need for bleeding, but oil volume precision is critical. This damper uses shaft displacement and chamber pressure to move oil through the base valve. This means even 5 ml overfill can cause performance issues or break parts.

No Other Custom Tools Included
- Just the custom 9/16" shaft clamp
- Everything else uses standard tools: circlip pliers, 24mm socket, isopropyl alcohol
