Fox Rail Damper Basic Open Bath Service Guide
Basic service for FOX Rail and Rail 2.0 dampers, simple open bath design with no IFP or pressurization. Super reliable and easy to refresh at home.
Just clean, refill with correct oil volume, and replace up to three o-rings if needed. No bleeding, no pressure, just old-school open bath damper.
Use this for 34 AWL, 36 AWL, Z1, Z2, and Marzocchi forks with Rail dampers from 2020–2025+
What's Included:
- GRIP Damper Body Clamp (same size)
- 10mm Shaft Clamp (used to hold damper shaft gently)
Oil Info:
- Use Fox 4wt or equivalent light damper oil
- DO NOT overfill, these dampers can hydrolock!
- Always check and confirm the correct oil volume for your model
- If you’re unsure of the volume, check the table below or consult Fox
References:
Oil Volumes (approx.) for 2025+ dampers:
- 34 AWL / Z2 / Z2 Remote: 63cc in open bath (Not LOWERS!!)
- 34 AWL Sport: 58cc in open bath (Not LOWERS!!)
- 36 AWL HD / Z1 / Z1 Remote: 69cc in open bath (Not LOWERS!!)
- 34 / 36 AWL Sport Rebound-Only: Varies, consult Fox
If your fork isn’t listed, check Fox tech documents or use trusted video references to confirm volumes before servicing.
⚠️ Warnings:
- NEVER overfill the damper, it can hydrolock and blow the seals
- These dampers are not pressurized, no IFP, no air
- If your fork loses damping, it’s almost always just the base valve seal or bad oil or just no more oil.
- Do not overtighten the damper shaft when clamping, use light torque
- NEVER overfill the damper, it can hydrolock and blow the seals

Pro Tips
- These dampers are nearly bulletproof, rarely need full rebuilds
- Flush out old oil and metal particles every 200h if riding hard
- If damping feels weak in compression, replace base valve seal and change the oil
- If you have full fast rebound, you might need to rebuild the LSR.
- Always cycle the damper shaft slowly after filling, look for bubbles
- If compression vanishes after a few strokes, you may be low on oil
- If the shaft won’t compress at all after 70% travel, you probably overfilled
- There’s no IFP or self-bleed, volume control is critical in open bath systems
