How to make my own pellet Retainer Tool

Make Your Own Pellet Retainer Tool (for Cheap!)

If you want to rebuild your shock damper at home but don’t want to buy a full pellet retainer tool, you can make your own in just a few minutes using a Dremel and a cheap 4 mm Allen key.

Why DIY?
  • Cost: under $5 in parts
  • Quick: built in under 10 minutes
  • Custom-fit: perfectly sized slot for your needle
What You Need
How to Do It
  1. Clamp the 4 mm Allen key securely in an vise.
  2. Using the Dremel with a very thin cutting disk, cut a straight slot into the flat face of the short end of the Allen key.
  3. Cut only deep enough for the needle to sit in the slot without wobble. Keep the slot centered.
  4. Lightly deburr the edges using a file or sandpaper.
Using Your DIY Pellet Retainer

That’s it. You now have a functional pellet retainer tool. Insert the Allen key into the bleed port as usual and guide the needle through the slot to retain the pellet during pressurization.

Compatibility
  • Works with rear shocks using a 4 mm or 5/32″ Allen bleed port
  • Compatible with Fox and Cane Creek (the two brands that use pellet retainers)
Tips for Success
  • Grind the slot on the flat face, not on the edge of the Allen key.
  • Use the thinnest cutting disk possible and work slowly.
  • If you already own a Dremel, this costs almost nothing.
