How to make my own pellet Retainer Tool
Make Your Own Pellet Retainer Tool (for Cheap!)
If you want to rebuild your shock damper at home but donβt want to buy a full pellet retainer tool, you can make your own in just a few minutes with a Dremel and a cheap 4 mm Allen key.
Why DIY?
- Cost: under $5 in parts
- Quick: build in under 10 minutes
- Custom-fit: perfect slot for your needle
What You Need
- Dremel cutting disks (very thin)
- 4 mm Allen key (L-style)
- A Dremel or angle grinder (with a thin zip-cut wheel)
- Safety glasses & gloves (recommended)
How To Do It
- Clamp the 4 mm Allen key in a vise or secure it safely.
- Using the Dremel with a very thin cutting disk, cut a slot straight into the flat side of the short end of the Allen key, just deep enough to fit a needle.
- Make sure the slot is centered and only as wide as necessary so the needle rests snugly without wobble.
- Sand the edges gently with a file or sanding paper to clean up any sharp bits.
Thatβs it! You now have a working pellet retainer tool. Insert the Allen key into the bleed port as normal, and guide your needle or pin through the slot to hold the pellet.
Compatibility
- Works with all rear shocks using a 4 mm or 5/32β³ Allen port
- Compatible with Fox and Cane Creek. (The two brands that use pellet retainers)
Tips for Success
- Grind on the flat face, not the edge of the Allen key.
- Use a very thin disk and work slowly to keep the slot precise.
- If you already own a Dremel, this project costs next to nothing.
