Rockshox Forks Quick 50h Lower Leg Service

RockShox Forks: Quick 50h Lower Leg Service (No Dust Wiper Replacement)

Fast, simple lower leg service for modern RockShox forks. No dust wiper removal required. This is a fluid refresh only, meant to restore performance and reduce friction.

Overview and scope

You do not need any tools from us for this job. Standard hand tools are sufficient.

If you plan on doing more suspension work later, see our Essential Tools Starter Pack.

Before reinstalling the lowers, generously grease the inside of the dust wiper seals and the lower leg bushings. This significantly reduces stick friction.

What you’ll need
  • Soft mallet with rubber or plastic head
  • 5 mm Allen key (some forks may use different sizes)
  • Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloths
  • Shock pump for reassembly

No tools are included.

Optional tools for opening top caps:

Key steps and shaft release

Example video showing shaft striking technique: Watch at 2:30

Fully unscrew the foot bolts, remove the crush washers, then screw the bolts back in two turns before striking the shafts into the lowers.

If you skip this step, the crush washers can be damaged.

Pro tips
  • This is a 50-hour refresh only. Do not remove dust wipers or internal seals.
  • Common oils include FOX 20 wt Gold, RockShox 15 wt, or Maxima Plush. Always verify the correct oil for your fork.
  • For oil volume reference, use this oil volume list.
  • If you later replace dust wipers, use our Dust Wiper Seal Driver Finder.
  • See our MTB Suspension Jargon Guide if you are just getting started.
  • Apply light grease such as Slickoleum or SRAM Butter inside dust wipers and lower leg bushings.
  • Always remove sag rings and small springs from the stanchions, then reinstall them before sliding the lowers back on.
Warnings
  • Always depressurize air springs fully and gradually before opening the fork.
  • Do not overfill. Excess oil can cause hydrolock.
  • If you are unsure about your fork model, confirm specifications using RockShox TrailHead.
